New Guides to establish future Poetry Places in Libraries and Health Care

We're pleased to say that the work done by the Poetry On Loan project (West Midlands Libraries) will live on in the form of future resources here on our website as well as a revised Poetry Society Library Membership package (beginning mid-January 2000).

Please visit the Poetry Society's Library Room to see what West Midlands poetry activists have initiated in their own libraries, and ideas they share for inspiration.

A sneak preview of what library members of the Poetry Society can look forward to:

Quarterly issues of Poetry Review and Poetry News for the library shelf
Four colourful poetry posters to hang on the wall
A mailing to local readers and writers groups* announcing the library as a 'Poetry Place'
A loose-leaf binder of the Poetry On Loan ideas for promoting poetry in the library
A copy of Passion for Poetry - a Reader's Guide to Contemporary Poetry

* Regional Arts Boards maintain current lists of active readers and writers groups in their region

Poetry & Health

Trainee doctors should be offered courses in drama, literature and philosophy to complement their medical training, the former chief medical officer Sir Kenneth Calman said... speaking at the launch of a new national council to encourage the use of the arts and humanities in health care. He said the council would ...encourage hospitals and health trusts to see the benefits of arts in day-to-day medical care. Leading cancer specialist Professor Michael Baum said he believed 'passionately that the arts can contribute substantially to healthy living zones.'
