National Poetry Day 2010:

National Poetry Day 2010 was celebrated on Thursday 7 October.

For the second year running, the Poetry Society organised a lively event together with the Southbank Centre: National Poetry Day Live. Once again the afternoon's events were entirely free.

Poetry could be discovered in the foyers and hidden corners of the Royal Festival Hall, and guests were invited to make themselves at home in the Clore Ballroom for live performances by a host of poetry’s famous names and rising stars. The day’s events were hosted by Ross Sutherland & Caroline Bird, and featured:

  • Simon Armitage, Jane Draycott, Ian Duhig, Luke Kennard, Daljit Nagra
  • Lemn Sissay performing Coleridge’s ‘Ancient Mariner’
  • Joelle Taylor & SLAMbassadors
  • Former Foyle Young Poets: Jay Bernard, Swithun Cooper, Holly Hopkins, Sarah Howe & Laura Seymour
  • Forward Prize Poets: Robin Robertson, Fiona Sampson & Jo Shapcott

Other events included: 'Getting Published’- a Poetry Review workshop; ‘Pick a Poem’ - a poetry lucky dip; Folk in a Box - ‘Poetry in a Box’; a screening of 'Postcards from Home' - postcards sent in by winners of the 2010 Foyle Young Poets of the Year Award; prescriptions & quizzes.

Further information:

Folf in a Box - 'Poetry in a Box'
Folk in a Box is a one-on-one music venue that's been taking festivals by storm. Exclusively for Southbank Centre, the box was turned into a tiny house for guests to experience a poetry encounter like no other. Visitors had a poem read to them alone by one of the poets who had appeared throughout the afternoon.

The poetry doctors...
Guests were invited to bring their ailment or addiction to the Poetry Doctors from the Saison Poetry Library, who would write out a poetry prescription.

Pick a Poem - a poetry lucky dip
Poems were available to take home, including exclusive signed copies.

Projections: Pictures and a thousand words...
The Foyle Young Poets of the Year were tour guides to the changing landscape of contemporary poetry, sending postcards from their home towns on the day the 2010 award-winners were announced. Plus the best of Global Poetry System, Southbank Centre's user-generated world map of poetry.

Pre-booked Workshops

Two other workshops ran during the afternoon (for pre-booked groups). Joelle Taylor lead a Slam workshop for schools. Ian Duhig lead a poetry writing workshop with writers from the Homeless Diamonds group from St Mungos.
