National Poetry Day 2012:

National Poetry Day Live!

On National Poetry Day 2012, celebrated on 4 October, the Poetry Society and Southbank Centre organised a star-studded afternoon in the Clore Ballroom at the Royal Festival Hall, with free readings from some of the most exciting poets and spoken words artists in the UK.

In keeping with National Poetry Day 2012’s theme of ‘Stars’, the public were invited to join Inua Ellams’ intergalactic Twitter poem, were offered a cosmic cure for a broken heart by the Poetry Library doctors, and could stargaze from one of the poetry tents along the South Bank, inspired by Peace Camp, Deborah Warner’s UK-wide poetry project commissioned for London 2012 Festival.

Afternoon events were compered by Poetry Society President Roger McGough and Joelle Taylor.

Readings included poets Grace Nichols, Rachel Rooney, former winners of the SLAMbassadors UK championship Jamal Msebele and Megan Beech, judges of the Foyle Young Poets of the Year Award Christopher Reid and Helen Mort, former Foyle winners Charlotte Higgins and Sarah Howe, as well as Karen McCarthy Woolf, Liane Strauss, Dannie Abse, Simon Barraclough, Mario Petrucci and John Cooper Clarke.

Poetryclass resources

To help teachers mark National Poetry Day in the classroom, the Poetry Society specially-commissioned two resources for National Poetry Day 2012. These star-themed lesson plans by Grace Nichols (resource for key stage 2) and Nicholas Roe (resource for key stage 4) remain available from Poetryclass.
