Helen Mort
Suspect 10

Make the fire talk about itself.

Torture the flames until they splutter the story.

Threaten the smoke into revealing its tale.

Beat the coal until it spills the beans,

And scrutinise the ash.

Make the fire talk about itself.

Helen Mort was a winner of the Foyle Young Poets Award on five occasions from 1997 to 2004 and her work has been published in a variety of publications including The Rialto, Times Educational Supplement and in several Poetry Society pamphlets. Her debut publication The Shape Of Every Box was published by Tall Lighthouse. "If you'd have suggested to me that poetry would become what I cared about most, I probably would have laughed. I'd always enjoyed writing and reading but winning the Foyle Young Poets maded me realise this was something I really wanted to do."
